As a child I remember getting my first Radio Controlled Car for Christmas. It was snowy as the dickens outside but I had to get it started and test-drive it. My father went to the garage and backed the car out into the 2-foot snowfall so we could run it around the garage.

Admittedly that is not the best place in the world but to me it was like I was sitting in Indianapolis and was running in the year’s 500-mile race. It was an incredible feeling that I still carry with me to this day and it is a memory that I remember fondly, even though it has been nearly fifty years ago.

In that one cold December day I became a convert to Nitro Radio Controlled Cars and RC Model cars and my father and I shared that love and hobby until the day he passed. Today I have passed the joy of that on to my three kids and am educating my seven year-old Grand Daughter on the amount of fun you can have with these RC bundles of joy and I have a feeling that they will pass it on to their kids when the time comes.

These things are fast and furious, we can each customize our own to fir whatever we want it to be, in fact my daughter repaints her car ever week without fear and we can count on her and her car being color coordinated with some new and bizarre color scheme each and every week. In contrast my own personal car looks like it should have been ready for the junk heap about 15 years ago. But it’s not the beauty of the unit but how fast it is and good old dad rarely loses a race. At least I don’t lose if I can help it.

This “hobby” has instilled a family value and a sense of right and wrong with the kids. They have learned sportsmanship and have even figured out that there are some things that are more fun than having that Blackberry glued to their palms as they text their little fingers off.

The sport of RC racing has done something that I had not been able to do, it actually brought the family together and we actually talk and laugh and enjoy the part of just being a family. No cell calls, no “do I have to go” arguments, no having something more important. My family looks forward to Saturday and our day at the races. We all make a day of it and look forward to it for the entire week and if it’s a rainy day and we can’t go, we actually are sad about it.

That has been no small feat and we owe the tightening of our family and the strengthening of the overall core family values to this sport and hobby that was started for me on that Christmas day long ago.

Nitro Radio Controlled Cars are hip, cool and a great way to bring your family together in a good way, who would have figured?

Most people are so used to remote controls. Seems like in my house there is a remote for everything, the TV, the Stereo, the lights. So it is only natural that the sport that my family enjoys also entails a remote. I am talking about Nitro Radio Controlled Cars.

You know, the little replica racers that on most weekends you can hear screaming around the vacant parking lot at the school or the dirt track out in back of the old mall. The little motorized mayhem makers that are sometimes do realistic it can be unnerving.

These things are great little hobby’s for everyone o any age. You can get the whole family together for a race or you can do it solo and go burn up the asphalt alone. You can do as we did and join a Model RC Car club and get together for shows and race competitions or just to admire things that are new and have some fun and laughs with some folks with similar interests.

This small sport can get into your veins as deeply as the NASCAR folks who travel the country following the races. The main difference here is that when the weekend is over, the entire family had fun and we still have enough money left for a great family dinner out.

I honestly know some people, my wife’s sister. Her husband is so into NASCAR that everything he owns is oriented to that sport; he just took a weekend vacation to enjoy the Richard Petty Driving Experience in Orlando. The entire weekend cost him just over $2,500 for just him. That same weekend we shared a family RC day out, with a nice movie and dinner after words and still came out like $2,350 ahead. Heck even if we had all gone out and bought new cars and gear we still could have gotten by at least a couple thousand less than he did. He has some memories, a credit card bill and a piece of paper saying he drove at 125 MPH and we just had fun.

You can see where I am going with this story; some people can tend to go off the deep end no matter what they are doing. We are no exception to the rule. I just tend to think that life is short and I prefer to enjoy my time here on earth doing things I love with the people I love. I am just happy that the people in my life that are dearest to me happen to enjoy running Nitro Radio Controlled Cars as much as I do.

All you really need to get started is the car, some fuel, batteries and a controller and I would suggest a carry case to store it all in. From there the sky is the limit. You can customize to your hearts desire. You can paint and pin stripe the body or make special design modifications so your weekend hobby can also be something you enjoy on the weeknights you are bored as well.

I recently bought a Traxxas Revo 3.3 RC (Radio controlled) Nitro fuel powered radio control car. The owner’s manual states that I can run this car on 10%, 20% or 33% nitro content fuel. However, after choosing one of these fuels for the ‘run in’ periods, the manufacturer recommends that I stick with that fuel foe the life time of the car. Does anybody know why I should stay with the same nitro content fuel for the entire lifetime, when the car is designed for all three %’s.? What damage could be done to the engine if I were to change?
Concievably in the long run switching fuels could damage your truck but in my experience I’ve never had a problem switchign fuels. Once you’ve broken your engine in at a certain percent it has been tuned and “run in” for being used to that fuel. Now traxxas, would like you to keep it at that percent on the basis that once it has been broken in the engine almost has a memory to run at a certain temp and combined mixture. While this is true, if you change fuel %’s and set the carb leaner or richer to the new fuel there should be no real damage. I have used different percents of fuel in most of my trucks, 20% for break in and bashing, and then when competing in races, run in the engine and tune the carb to run 30%. While I truly believe it is safe to switch percents, you should be experienced with nitro engines and know exactly what you’r doing with the carb when changing. It may be safe to switch percentages of fuel but I would never on the other hand change brands of fuel. Every car/truck I have started with traxxas fuel, I’ve only used Traxxas top fuel since then. *Traxxas states that as a precautionary measure to ensure no matter what you have a longer engine life. They want all users new and old to the hobby to be assured it will run better longer

Depends on what you wana do with em and what kind of performance you wana have. Electric is always gona be cheaper and easier to maintain but you wont get anywhere near the speed of a nitro or gasoline powered car. Nitro’s can go ALOT faster but they cost more, they are harder to build and there is more to maintain on them, air cleaners, glo-plugs, etc… Go down to your local hobby shop and talk to someone there. Discuss how and where you will be using the car and how much money you would like to be spending. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Make sure all the pipes are in good condition and not leaking. 2. Prime the engine by pressing the little pump (normally near the carburettor). Only pump a couple of times - you don’t want to flood the engine. 3. Connect the glow starter 4. Have the throttle slighty open/low revs (via controller 5. Turn the engine over with the glow plug switched on 6. Disconnect the glowstarter 7. Off you go!!
